The Rout(ine) To Success

We’ve been living with the in-laws for about six weeks now and it has been a surprisingly easy transition.  I had images of me skulking off to scream into a pillow or hide a quivering lip (crying is my go-to in times of stress!) Alas, there has been no screaming or crying (apart from when Hook died in Once Upon A Time – I bawled like a toddler with a broken breadstick). Continue reading

Facebonkers…Enough Is Enough

I have a confession. For the past few years I have been having an affair…with Facebook. It’s no secret that I have a Facebook profile, lots of *ahem* ‘friends’ and post regularly (albeit mostly via Instagram these days). What has been a secret is my utter obsession with it.   Continue reading

The British Vs. Maple

We’ve been back in Blighty about a month now so I thought it was a good time to share some of my observations so far.

I have to admit, I wasn’t too keen on moving back. As moving day approached I started to really question if it was the right decision. The draw of proximity to family and old friends never wavered but doubts about housing, finances, weather, schooling, etc all crept in towards the end.

Anyway, here we are, together again as a unit but on a different continent…and to be honest,  I am far more content than I expected to be. The unfamiliar British summer sunshine has played a big factor, as has seeing the boys change exponentially in the company of their grandparents. Continue reading

The British Maple Leaves Tdot: Stress, Strep and Suitcases

After a week of blubbing, packing, repacking, goodbyes and emergency doctor’s appointments we finally left Tdot.

Remarkably, the Lord, the General and I made it to the UK relatively unscathed but the last few days certainly weren’t without their dramas. Continue reading

The British Maple Leaves Tdot: Dear Toronto, It’s Not You, It’s Me

Dearest Tdot,

This is the hardest letter I’ve ever had to write.

We didn’t get off to a great start – you, with your subzero winters and slower than snail pace banking. Me, with my post-wedding blues and no job for the first time since I was 14. But we stuck at it, we pushed through the tough times and fell in love.  I embraced your pace of life, your obsession with coffee and even started to enjoy hockey. You (finally) gave me a job, adored my Britishness and taught me how to stay warm. Continue reading

Killing It This Week

Forgive me for taking another little break from the leaving Tdot series (consider it time to get my emotions in check before the home straight!)

After a tough couple of months full of uncertainty and stress, this week (so far) is turning out to be pretty damn good for some fairly random reasons: Continue reading

The British Maple Leaves Tdot: My Last Canada Day

You know that feeling, on that rare occasion, when you are the only sober person at a party and you look around and think WTF is going on?! It’s a precarious balance of funny and concerning, right? Then, when the loud-mouthed, sauced-up funny man suggest bungee-jumping from the landing with a silk scarf, you face palm and think ‘it’ll never happen’. Next thing you know, Funny Man is face down on the floor and people are laughing and crying in (almost) equal measure.   Continue reading

When you forget to take photos, just fake 'em in the airport!

Mums On Tour – Washington D.C

A couple of weekends ago was a momentous occasion for me…my first time away without the miniatures.  My partner in crime for the weekend was Margo.  In the words of Christina Yang, Margo is my (Canadian) person:

If I murdered someone, she's the person I'd call to help me drag the corpse across the living room floor. She's my person.

In typical, ‘mums on tour’ style, Margo and I arrived at the airport with three hours to spare.  We ate, drank and consumed way too much chocolate (no small person screaming like a banshee to share it!)

The British Maple Leaves Tdot: Telling The Tots

Moving is a shed-load of work at the best of times, but you should try doing it with a pre-terrible two-er and a threenager in tow.

The Lord is (and always has been) far too alert and perceptive for his age. I’m not boasting when I say this, if anything it is mightily frustrating for him (and us) because he doesn’t yet know how to deal with these ‘big feelings’.  I’ve learnt the hard way that we can’t hide anything from our darling threenager, so we decided to talk to the Lord very early on about the move. The British Maple Leaves Tdot: Picking And Packing

Peter Piper picked a pack of professional packers. But, did Peter Piper pick a pack of perfect packers?!

A move like this relies heavily on planning ahead and in the early days I was excited to finally have a reason to whip up a cheeky spreadsheet. Continue reading
